Issue Position: Empowering Our State To Take The lead In Conservation Initiatives

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

On an environmental note, I am pleased to have played an integral role in attracting the prestigious World Conservation Conference to Hawaii in 2016. Yes, this will bring visitors to our island, but even more important is that this initiative was intended to empower our state to take the lead in conservation initiatives to make critical management decisions locally instead of by the federal government. This will be very good for our district.
Bottom line -- the needs of our District's residents are first and foremost, and this must include safe, clean parks and recreation opportunities, affordable and accessible medical care and, as important, opportunities to enjoy this special place -- protect it for the future -- and also be able to participate in the 21st century global economy.
These are just a few of what are big, difficult issues and opportunities facing Hawai'i and my District today. They require deep thinking, good listening and honest discussion. I am honored to serve the residents of my District and our state and hope to be re-elected.
